The American Dream
Updated: Feb 15, 2020
I recently heard it said that the “American dream” will either reward you beyond your wildest dreams, or take you down completely, beyond reparation.
Really?? That seems like a cruel and unnecessary gamble with not only people, but the planet. A single edged sword spinning wildly in the universe, and we players are unsure of where it will land. Is this REALLY capitalism, and our capability for innovation, at its truest and best?
Is there a better way?
I believe there is. And, I hope you do, too.
I believe we can be whole, present, caring leaders. I believe we can take into account and honor all stakeholders in a company and not merely shareholders. I believe we can have a culture in business that heals people and systems, instead of decimating them or just doing “less harm”. I believe we can nurture the earth and all of its inhabitants, not just the ones with the most money. And, I deeply believe that we can have fun doing it.
And, there is research to prove this.
Raj Sisodia studied 28 conscious companies from 1996 to 2011 and discovered they outperformed the S&P 500 index by a factor of 10.5. Conscious companies are defined by striving to adhere to the above mentioned tenets of conscious leadership, stakeholder importance and care, conscious culture, and having a larger purpose. So, not only can companies help heal toxic cultures, and add to the joy of the lives they touch, they can do better financially by doing so. To me, this is a critical definition of success.
Not surprisingly, it is found that when people within organizations and in contact with organizations are valued, not only are they happier, their job performance and their communities improve. This creates healthy cultures, as well as healthy and thriving economies.
We are human beings. Our superpowers are innovation and spirit. Taken together, they create magic and solutions. A magic that can honor all beings on earth and change the world. So, how will you use your human superpowers? How will you engage in an impactful, present, meaningful way in your business and the world?
You are, after all, a superhero and you can initiate change.
